Neville Goddard SATS: The State Akin To Sleep
SATS is Neville's practice of entering the wish fulfilled while the body is relaxed and drowsy, then falling asleep in the feeling that the desire is already done.
The Drowsy Doorway
SATS Is The Moment Before Sleep Becomes Imagination
The state akin to sleep is one of Neville Goddard's clearest and most repeated techniques. It is the drowsy borderland where the body is deeply relaxed, the senses are less commanding, and imagination can be accepted with unusual ease. Neville used this state because it allows the fulfilled end to feel real before the reasoning mind begins arguing with it.
SATS is not simply visualization at night. It is entering a state in which the desire is already fulfilled and letting that state be the last impression before sleep. The body becomes quiet. Attention turns inward. A short imaginal scene is repeated until it feels real. Then sleep is entered from the fulfilled state.
The power of SATS is its simplicity. You do not need a long ceremony. You do not need to imagine every detail of the future. You need one scene that implies completion and the feeling that it is true now. The scene is the doorway. The feeling is the substance. Sleep receives the state.
When SATS is practiced well, the desire begins to feel less far away. The old story may lose some of its emotional grip. You may find yourself returning more naturally to the end during the day because the night has been given a new assumption.
Neville's Original Words
Why Sleep And Feeling Matter In SATS
Neville's own words make the SATS practice clear: the drowsy state helps the assumption feel real, and feeling is the way the imagined end is accepted within consciousness. These short extracts show why SATS is not a random bedtime ritual. It is the deliberate acceptance of the wish fulfilled before sleep.
Assumption Changes The Future
Man, by assuming the feeling of his wish fulfilled, alters his future in harmony with his assumption.

Why Neville Used The State Akin To Sleep
Neville taught that the senses often keep consciousness tied to the visible world. During the day, the outer facts can feel loud. The unpaid bill, the unanswered message, the symptom, the empty room, the old memory, the lack of evidence: all of these can press upon attention. The drowsy state softens that pressure.
In SATS, the body rests and the outer world becomes less dominant. This makes it easier to experience the imaginal act as present reality. The mind no longer needs to solve the whole route. It can simply enter the fulfilled scene and accept it. That is why SATS is useful for desires that feel emotionally charged or difficult to believe while fully awake.
The state is not magic because of the time of night. It is powerful because consciousness is receptive. The desire can be impressed as fact when you are no longer straining against the senses. Neville's method uses that receptivity deliberately.
Sleep also matters because it closes the day with an assumption. If the last inner act is fear, consciousness is resting in fear. If the last inner act is fulfillment, consciousness is resting in the end. SATS lets the fulfilled state become the final word of the day.
Choose A Scene That Implies The Desire Is Done
The scene is the heart of SATS. It should be short, natural and complete. It should not show you trying to get the desire. It should show something that would happen because the desire is already fulfilled. Neville's instruction is to go to the end.
If the desire is a home, the scene might be holding the key, sleeping in the bedroom, or hearing a friend say how beautiful your home is. If the desire is love, the scene might be hearing loving words, feeling a ring, or sharing an ordinary moment with the relationship already established. If the desire is money, the scene might be paying easily, receiving confirmation, or feeling the calm of financial freedom. If the desire is health, the scene might be walking freely, sleeping peacefully, or hearing good news.
A good SATS scene does not need to impress anyone else. It only needs to convince you. It should be something your mind can repeat without effort and your feeling can accept as real. If the scene is too complex, simplify it. One sentence heard inwardly can be enough. One touch, one image, one small movement can carry the end.
The scene should be entered in first person. You are not watching yourself succeed. You are the one living the fulfilled moment. Hear with your own ears. Feel with your own hands. Receive the words as spoken to you.
The Feeling Matters More Than Perfect Imagery
Many people worry because they do not see vivid pictures. Neville's SATS method does not depend on perfect visual ability. The deeper requirement is the feeling of reality. You may see, hear, touch, know or simply feel the end. The imaginal act is successful when it gives you the inner conviction that the desire is fulfilled.
Feeling does not always mean excitement. A fulfilled desire may feel calm, relieved, secure, loved, supplied, healthy, recognized or ordinary. Let the end tell you the feeling. A relationship fulfilled may feel like peace and tenderness. Money fulfilled may feel like room to breathe. Health fulfilled may feel like normal function. Work fulfilled may feel like belonging and capability.
If the scene feels flat, ask what would be different if this were done now. Would you relax? Would your breathing change? Would you smile? Would you feel safe? Would you stop trying? That shift is the feeling you are seeking. Bring that feeling into the scene and let it become present.
The aim is not to perform a perfect technique. The aim is to sleep from the fulfilled state. If the feeling is real, the scene can be simple.
How To Enter SATS Step By Step
Begin when you are ready to rest. Lie down or sit comfortably. Let the body become still. You do not need to force relaxation; let the body settle. As drowsiness approaches, bring the chosen scene to mind. Keep it short enough to repeat gently.
Enter the scene as though it is happening now. If someone speaks, hear them speak to you. If you hold something, feel it in your hand. If you move through a room, feel yourself there. Let the scene loop naturally, not mechanically. Each repetition should deepen the feeling of reality.
When the mind wanders, return without irritation. Wandering is not failure. The practice is the return. If you become too awake, soften the effort. If you become too sleepy, let the scene be even simpler. The end should be easy enough to carry into sleep.
Remain in the fulfilled feeling until sleep comes. You are not trying to stay awake to finish a certain number of repetitions. You are letting sleep overtake you while consciousness is resting in the wish fulfilled.
1. Relax The Body
Let the senses soften and the body become still.
2. Bring In The Scene
Use one short moment that proves the desire is complete.
3. Enter First Person
See, hear or feel from inside the fulfilled event.
4. Add Reality
Let the scene carry relief, love, certainty, peace or naturalness.
5. Repeat Gently
Loop the scene without strain until it feels familiar.
6. Sleep In The End
Let the fulfilled state be the last impression before sleep.
What To Do If You Fall Asleep Too Quickly
If you fall asleep before the scene feels complete, make the scene shorter. Use one phrase, one touch, one image or one feeling. Hearing "It is done" or "Congratulations" may be enough. SATS should not become a fight to stay awake. The point is to sleep from fulfillment, not to hold a long performance in mind.
You can also practice earlier in the evening while still relaxed but not exhausted. Let the body become quiet and rehearse the scene a few times, then return to it again as you fall asleep later. The scene will already be familiar.
If sleep arrives quickly, trust the state you entered. Even a brief imaginal act can be powerful when it is accepted. The aim is quality of feeling, not length.
What To Do If The Mind Keeps Arguing
If the mind argues with the scene, the issue is often that the old state still feels more natural. Do not turn SATS into an argument. Choose a scene that feels easier to accept, or use a phrase that carries relief. The end can be simple: "All is well," "It is settled," "Thank you," "I am so happy for you," or "It worked beautifully."
You can also revise the strongest piece of old evidence before entering SATS. If a memory, conversation or fear keeps interrupting, revise it first. Then return to the fulfilled scene. Revision clears the inner ground so the end can be accepted more easily.
The mind does not need to be bullied into silence. It needs to be moved into another state. Let the scene be gentle enough that you can enter it without tension.
Using SATS For Love, Money, Health And Work
For love, use a scene that implies being loved now. Hear loving words. Feel the ring. Share a simple evening. Let the relationship feel established, secure and natural. The feeling is being chosen, cherished and at peace.
For money, use a scene that implies supply. Pay easily. Receive confirmation. See the amount settled. Hear good news. Feel the relief of financial freedom or steady provision. The feeling is ease, room to breathe and normal receiving.
For health, use a scene that implies wholeness. Walk freely. Sleep peacefully. Hear good news. Return to an activity that feels normal. The feeling is relief, function, trust and calm.
For work, use a scene that implies success. Hear congratulations. Receive the offer. Finish a successful day. See the client delighted. Feel capability, recognition and belonging.
Love
Sleep as the one already loved, chosen and secure.
Money
Sleep in the feeling of supply, payment and ease.
Health
Sleep from wholeness, relief and normal function.
Work
Sleep as established, capable and successful.
After SATS, Live From The Same End
SATS is not meant to be isolated from the rest of the day. If you fall asleep in fulfillment and then spend the next day rehearsing lack, attention becomes divided. Neville's work asks for loyalty to the fulfilled state. The day does not need constant technique, but it does need a return to the end.
When the old story rises, remember the state you slept in. Hear the same good news. Feel the same relief. Let your inner speech agree with the end. If something happens during the day that contradicts the desire, revise it before sleep and return to SATS again.
The result to look for first is an inner change. The desire feels more natural. The old story feels less final. You react differently. You stop needing to check so much. The end becomes a place you can return to easily. That inner shift is valuable because Neville places cause within consciousness.
Persistence
Remain Faithful When The Outer World Has Not Changed Yet
One of the most important parts of SATS happens after the imaginal scene. Neville did not teach the state akin to sleep as a quick night-time wish followed by a return to the old identity. The scene is accepted before sleep so consciousness can begin living from a new fact. When morning comes, the outer world may still look the same. That is when the assumption needs loyalty.
Faithfulness does not mean forcing yourself to feel perfect all day. It means you stop treating the old facts as the final truth about who you are. If the scene before sleep was being loved, then during the day you return to being loved. If the scene was financial relief, you return to being supplied. If the scene was health, you return to wholeness. The visible world may not have caught up yet, but you have chosen the state from which you are going to live.
Neville makes this point plainly in the 1948 Lessons: assumptions though false, if sustained, will harden into fact
. That one sentence explains why SATS is not finished when the scene ends. The imaginal act is the beginning of a new state. Sustaining it means letting the fulfilled assumption have more authority within you than the old appearance.
This is also why SATS works best with a simple, believable end. If the scene is easy to return to, it can become a quiet inner home during the day. You do not need to replay a long movie every hour. You can return to the feeling carried by the scene: the relief, the certainty, the settledness, the naturalness. That feeling keeps the assumption alive.
When the outer world contradicts the imaginal act, answer it from the end. A delay becomes a reminder to feel completion. A doubtful thought becomes a cue to hear the good news again. A tense moment becomes an opportunity to revise and go back to sleep in the corrected state. The practice becomes less about doing SATS perfectly and more about accepting the fulfilled self as the one you now are.
Return To The Scene
Use the same short scene or phrase whenever the old story tries to feel final.
Carry The Feeling
Let relief, certainty or naturalness become the atmosphere you come back to.
Let The Means Unfold
Neville's method asks you to occupy the end, not work out every bridge of incidents.
Sleep From Fulfillment Again
Each night can renew the assumption until the fulfilled state feels like your normal identity.
Where To Study SATS In Neville's Work
SATS belongs beside Neville's teachings on imagination, feeling, assumption and sleep. Feeling Is the Secret is essential because it explains why the feeling of fulfillment matters. The Power of Awareness gives the wider structure of desire, assumption and state. The 1948 Lessons are especially helpful because Neville explains sleep, assumption, the state akin to sleep and the discipline of accepting the fulfilled end in a classroom-style sequence. Neville's lectures give many examples of short imaginal acts used before sleep or in a deeply relaxed state.
Study SATS with living in the end and Revision. SATS plants the fulfilled state before sleep. Living in the end carries that state through the day. Revision removes the old evidence that tries to pull you back.
